THE MANDATE: FACTOR Supports the Independent Canadian Music Industry

The mandate for FACTOR in Canada says that it is “dedicated to providing assistance toward the growth and development of the Canadian independent music industry.”
The money FACTOR provides to Canadian musicians…

I don’t know a lot about FACTOR, nor have I investigated both sides of this issue. I do know that the music industry is a business with money being the number one driving force behind the decisions being made. And with so little money to be made in the industry these days, none of what is said in this post surprises me in any way.

Heavy Heart for Matt Mays and Friends:

I’m going to my first concert of 2013 (whaaaat?!) tonight to see Matt Mays and the rest of his band rock the Commodore. But they’ll be missing a key piece of their band, as they found their guitar player Jay Smith deceased in his Edmonton hotel room yesterday morning.

Most bands would call off the rest of their tour and mourn their loss, but Matt and the boys are soldiering on and playing, as they feel it’s what Jay would have wanted. All the proceeds they earn from their next few shows are going to Jay Smith’s widow and children to help support them in this extremely tragic and difficult time. Needless to say, tonight will likely be one of the most difficult shows anyone in the band has ever played, as it will be the first since Smith’s passing.

You can listen to and download Jay Smith’s self-titled album on Bandcamp right here. And you should, it’s pretty damn good.

My condolences to Jay Smith’s family and all his band/tour members.

GUYS - we escaped relatively unscathed from this Toronto-guy who was anonymously trashing almost everyone playing at CMW.

To be fair, his goal was to post “honest” reviews of everyone. Speaking more broadly than just our review, in a strange way it is refreshing that someone is saying the stuff in public that bands often say about each other in the green room (indie acts take note, to quote a Brother Act lyric, “your friends are not your friends”). That said, the overall vibe and energy put into the world by this blog isn’t really our cup of tea; we really do try not to slam other bands unnecessarily.

Anyhow, read below for what is basically a five-outta-five-stars review from this guy :)
